1. Please introduce yourself.: i'm natalie!! hello!!!
2. How long have you been making websites?: i started my current website in 2023 but i also had a piczo website when i was a child that i started around... maybe grade 2?
3. And what got you into the hobby?: i was looking for a specific doll dress up game one night and stumbled upon neocities instead! i spent a long time looking at personal sites and loved them so much i became infatuated with the idea of making my own ♡
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?: i still like personal sites the best! i like seeing what kind of things people hold dear.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?: i come up with them as i go along!
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.: & awhe †
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?: making cute page designs!!!
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?: the actual coding part.......... or maybe taking pictures of stuff in real life that i want to showcase on my site..........
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?: i use different ones! i like the cleanness of sites that use the same layout, but my aesthetic tastes are way too varied for that
10. How confident are you with CSS?: not very!!!
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?: maybe! i don't know! i don't know if i'm doing anything correctly lol
12. What is your favourite HTML element?: <br> go brrrrrr
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?: i admit i will usually try to find a template that matches my ideal the closest first and then edit it down to what i actually want. there are a few pages on my site i've coded from complete scratch myself but they tend to be the weakest imo!! i'm learning,
14. Do you know JavaScript?: no.............
15. How about PHP?: even no-er.............
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?: yes and no. i try to keep most pages cutesy but if i think a different aesthetic suits a pages theme better i'll switch it up!
17. Are you more focused on content or design?: i try to hit a happy medium!
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?: not currently but i'd love to someday! neocities suits me fine for now.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?: i like them, i think they're fun to explore. i caught the end of the personal website web era and only explored on piczo when i was very young so it's hard for me to say if they're accurate at all, but i think pseudo-retro nostalgia has its own charm in some ways so i tend to enjoy those sites regardless.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?: i don't fully know what that means and at this point i'm too afraid to ask
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?: cute cute cute!!!!! everyone should have at least one!!! i think its so lovely!
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?: even better!!!!!!! the cutest!!!!! i never would've fallen down the personal web rabbit hole without them!
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?: my site ended up a lot cleaner and more fairy kei than i originally planned. when i was creating my site at first i imagined something a lot more pastel and super sugary sweet with lots of clouds and rainbows and the sort. i'm not upset with my site by any means, i still love it tons and think its really cute! but if i was going to start over i'd probably try to get closer to that original vision.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?: sometimes! i love sites with interesting and interactive pages but i lack the coding and art abilities to make it work myself. there's so many talented people out there it's hard not to be!!!
25. What text editor do you use?: codepen or neocities straight up LOL
26. Why do you use that one?: lazy. if it ain't broke.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?: i host them directly to neocities for the most part
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?: mfw i didn't even know there was debate
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?: according to neocities i am using 150~ mb
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?: files yes, actual code sometimes. when i remember. i need to get better at this!!
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?: i think they both have their merits! i'm easy to please
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?: i generally gravitate towards blue and pink because they're my favourites
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?: mmm there was a brief period last year where i went through a social isolation arc and thought about it. generally no though.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?: i have a few webmaster friends! generally i'm a bit shy to reach out though ;;
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?: a couple of my friends know about it but haven't seen it. i only bring it up when i want to ask permission to post about them. my boyfriend also knows and has seen my colors tcg stuff but i don't think he remembers the url or anything. speaking candidly about my emotions in general is a real problem of mine but especially when it comes to those close to me. if they knew i feel like i would withhold a lot more than i already do on this site and that is kind of antithetical to the existence of it!
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?: i guess so! maybe a few times a month lately? it's pretty on and off, i'm a very tunnel-vision prone person when it comes to hobbies
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?: once a page is finalized i generally will not change it (though i have on occasion). i don't like change
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?: me-focused :)
39. Do you do web design professionally?: noooooooo
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?: i think it would be a fun career if i was any good at it or had any drive to get better. currently i'm studying with the intention of going into the publishing industry!
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?: sometimes!! i love emails. i feel i might be a bit overwhelming because i'm a quick responder though ;;
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?: yeah, i have quite a few but i mainly use twitter. i dislike it but i can't quit........ help me...........
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?: yes as well! i'm very active on discord
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?: i do! i like a large variety of music but lately i've been shuffling a playlist with the strokes, arctic monkeys, paramore, black kids, blondie, hozier, the cure, oingo boingo, mother mother, franz ferdinand, and a couple other random songs the local oldies radio station plays
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?: all on one. at least for now
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?: many LOL
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?: i try to! i think i present a bit softer and sweeter on this site than i am in reality. generally speaking, i think i'm a lot rougher and more boyish than my site would suggest
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?: i like to think so! i am maybe not confident enough to know if they feel the same
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?: there are a few things i'd like to change if i could but largely i'm content
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?: when an image is over top of a div and i can't click the links 😭
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?: i really like those now pages some people have! (<-- guy who does not have one)
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?: all i gotta say is div my beloved
53. Do you consider different browsers?: no LOL
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.: i use google chrome. it's terrible
55. And what OS are you on?: windows 10
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?: it was free with my education. i dislike every change windows ever makes and would live in windows vista or windows 7 forever if i could. give me back purble place you bums
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?: no but it doesn't stop me anyway 😭
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?: i dislike being jumpscared but i think there is a whimsical nature to it that i have to respect
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?: SO cute!!! i love them!!! i am in many!
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?: i have two and a half (coded, unfilled). personally i think just having a small write up and some pictures is enough but i do like exploring ones that have more meat to them....
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?: i would say so
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?: probably something with an interactive home screen that links to various sections in cute ways.....
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?: no, sometimes LOOOL
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?: hitting <br> a bunch of times instead of spacing anything properly
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?: don't take advice from me!!!! i'm barely keeping the lights on!!!!
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?: hardcode some if its specific to the situation
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?: cute! easy!
69. How about table-based layouts?: also cute!
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?: i think they're fine. they have a nice blog kind of vibe. my homepage is three-column but that was kind of by accident. i just wanted it to fit nicely on my screen without a scrollbar, whenever it accidentally gets too long i cut stuff out to maintain my desired length
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?: depends on the page!
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.: no
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?: only when the need arises, i can barely make a layout to begin wtih
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?: very much so beginner
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?: only if i'm specifically curious about how they managed to do something
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?: i picked up some very small html knowledge back in my tumblr days. after that it was all looking at other peoples code, w3schools, googling "how do i do x in html," and awhe's † old resources. they had a lot of good info in their templates that i still refer back to and you can see if you snoop my code LOL
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?: i probably have without realizing
78. Thoughts on floating elements?: i wish they would float easier but when i conquer them i am happy
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?: i almost exclusively use px. the % only comes out if its absolutely necessary
80. Do you have a favourite font?: when i was a kid i used to like century gothic a LOT. these days i tend to just use arial until i have to change it for whatever reason. on my site i use a google font called abeezee, partly because i liked how it looked and partly because i was looking at the list alphabetically and it was close to the top
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?: yeah, sure. i don't know under what context i would but if i had to i don't see why not. i did it briefly for a school project
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?: sometimes!! not as often these days. i go through phases
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?: i don't bookmark because my bookmarks are a mess but if there's an rss feed of a site i like i'll sub to it. otherwise i'll put it on my links page to refer back to later
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?: the sheer amount of yaoi i consume on a monthly basis
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?: yes! video games primarily, though i try to collect physical media of all my favourite things
86. How often and for how long are you online?: don't ask me questions like that man come on i play runescape
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?: me!
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?: let me get the hang of regular html first please
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?: nooo
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?: no as well, but weeble showed me how hers works and it looks sooooooo nice. i fear i am not at that level yet but its been on the brain....
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?: yes but i don't know how well it works and i don't even really look at it LMAO i just think it looks cute on my page hehe
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?: not currently but i think i would like to. not really sure which to join at the current minute though!
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?: if its a brand new page i prepare elsewhere first, if i'm just editing its directly on neocities
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?: i have been complimented but i think i am not confident enough in myself to be like I'm Cool
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?: yes 😭 every day i have to hold myself back from deleting my poetry page. it's coded terribly (because i did it myself) and i'm still a bit embarrassed about sharing something so personal. also a lot of those poems need to be edited so bad its unreal
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?: i'd leave it for as long as neocities lets it live
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?: yes and no. i definitely reveal more than i think the average webmaster does, but as previously stated, i don't know that i've been my most Authentic out there
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?: my best online friend is a lesbian that lives in my discord app that i met on a homestuck rp site about 7 years ago. her only other online presence is tumblr and we do not follow each other there because our relationship is odd by nature. i have seen her face maybe twice and we have never voice chatted. she is my closest confidant and we have messaged each other every single day without fail these past 7(ish) years and send gifts to each others homes
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?: not really but i might have to start one of these days
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.: i learned that i may be the worst webmaster known to man
